The Group 1 Lightning Stakes will be run this Saturday, 30 January at the spacious Flemington race course in Melbourne - which is home to the Emirates Melbourne Cup.
This 1000m weight for age race (run down the straight six course) has prize money of over $500,000 and sees the return of Group 1 racing to Melbourne. The 2010 Lightning Stakes has the makings of a very exciting race with the likes of Burdekin Blues from Queensland entered, along with Caulfield Guineas winner Starspangledbanner and Thousand Guineas winner Irish Lights.
Scenic Blast won the 2009 Lightning Stakes when he carried 58.5 kilograms to defeat Typhoon Zed in second place with Grand Duels coming in third.
Admission costs for Adults is only $20 and for Concession/Students $16 and Pensioners $10.
Gates open at 11.20am with the first race to be run at 12.50pm and the last at 5.30pm. Various restaurants will be available on the day with activities for the children such as pony rides, face painting.
